Not a name that you would usually associate with contemporary exhibitions, Les Abattoirs was formerly Toulouse's city abattoir. In 2000, it became the Toulouse Modern and Contemporary Art Centre. Situated on the left bank of the River Garonne, Les Abbatoirs has become one of Toulouse's top cultural centres. For many, it's most memorable work is the huge auditorium curtain on display, which was created by Picasso. The gallery's collection now includes around 2,000 works of contemporary art.

Housed in a former Augustinian monastery, this fine arts museum is noted for both its fine collection of paintings and artefacts and its unique setting in one of France's finest 14th-century monastic buildings. Exhibits at the Musée des Augustins feature everything from Romanesque sculptures, through to Renaissance and classical works, as well as Italian and French paintings. The work of Toulouse-Lautrec is also to be found here.

Galerie Municipale du Château d'Eau

The Toulouse Galerie Municipale du Château d'Eau was the first art museum in France to be devoted purely to photographic work. In the past 30 years, more than 400 exhibitions have been held here, bringing together the work of some of the best-known photographers in the world. The Galerie Municipale also displays the work of young photographers.
